What Treatment is right for me?

The art of a consultation

Bri Williams, RN, BSN

Refined Aesthetics Med Spa, pllc

Sandpoint, Idaho

When it comes to aging gracefully there are so many product and treatment options available that it can become overwhelming. Between skincare, in-office treatments, and even surgery, it can be difficult to know where to start. Consulting with an aesthetic provider or plastic surgeon is an excellent way to learn from the professionals which treatments and products are best for helping you reach your goals. Consultations are generally complimentary or involve a small fee that is applied to your treatment should you choose to go through with one. Below are some tips to ensure your consultation is successful and allows you to make an informed decision on selecting a provider.

Make a list of your priorities

Often aesthetic goals must be accomplished over several visits to ensure natural looking results and a safe treatment. Prior to your consultation make a list of the areas you would like to address and prioritize their importance. For instance, perhaps you would like to remove age spots/hyperpigmentation and address the lines in your forehead but tightening the skin on your neck is your biggest concern. Together you and your provider can develop a treatment plan that takes into consideration your areas of greatest concern, healing time and budget to optimizes your outcome.

What are your credentials?

The first question you should ask is “what are your credentials”? If considering plastic surgery, it is important that your provider is certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In most states, a general surgeon can legally perform plastic surgery, but they lack the rigorous training and credentialing that comes with being a certified plastic surgeon.

If considering less invasive aesthetic treatments, such as Botox or dermal fillers, ask what degree the provider holds, where they have trained, and how much experience they have. While complications are rare, it is imperative that you are in the hands of a trained medical professional that can manage complications and keep you safe.

Can I see your work?

Ask to see before and after photos of the provider’s work. This is important as it allows you to visualize realistic expectations as well as see if the provider’s work is in line with your desired outcome. Considering a tummy tuck or breast augmentation? While looking at before and after photos find similar body shapes and sizes to your own to gauge what is a realistic outcome and whether you are happy with the result. The same can be said for less invasive treatments, like Botox and lip filler.

A consultation is an opportunity for you to interview potential providers to find one that is a good fit for you. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ensure that you are on the same page. When making alterations to your appearance it is important that you are comfortable with your provider and their treatment plan for you.

The Top 5 Treatments

The aesthetic industry has taken the medical community by storm with new treatments popping up every year! According to the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine, there are 5 treatments that they consider the most sought after due to convenience (no surgery or downtime), affordability, and the amazing results they deliver. The countdown is on for the top treatments!!

#5 Chemical Peels

This in-office treatment is quick, easy, painless, and helps to reveal fresh beautiful skin with a glow. Using a combination of skin-friendly acids (retinoic acid, salicylic acid, and kojic acid) and powerful antioxidants (glutathione and vitamin C) a chemical peel works by safely removing to top layers of skin to reveal new skin, taking with it age spots, fine lines, and acne. Chemical peels range in price from $99-$400, and treatment takes less than thirty minutes. The level of peeling someone experiences can vary from light sloughing to extreme peeling lasting up to a week. Plan your treatment a minimum of two weeks before any big events or travel to ensure you are completely healed and glowing.

#4 HydraFacial™

The HydraFacial™ resurfacing procedure thoroughly cares for your skin providing cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and hydration, all while Vortex –Fusing™ antioxidants, peptides, and Hyaluronic acid into the skin. This is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure that delivers instant results with no discomfort or downtime. The procedure is soothing, moisturizing, non-irritating, and immediately effective.

Pricing ranges from $149-$299 and you will likely see results immediately after treatment. Your skin will feel smooth and hydrated for one to four weeks. For improved, longer-lasting results, consider using medical-grade skin care at home and monthly HydraFacial treatments.

#3 Laser Hair Removal

If you are ready to ditch your razor and never dread another wax appointment again, then laser hair removal is for you! During the laser treatment, a diode laser beam passes through the skin towards the hair follicles. The penetrating energy then heats up the root of the hair, which in turn prevents future hair growth. Laser hair removal is safe on most areas of the body that have unwanted hair. Most commonly treated areas include bikini, underarms, legs, arms, chest, back, shoulders, stomach, neck, chin, and sideburns. A series of 6-8 treatments are required to reach optimal results and the number of treatments varies depending on the type of laser used. Price varies depending on the area of the body being treated and treatment is generally $900-$1500 for a complete series of treatments. The best part? Results are permanent!! Big hormonal changes such as pregnancy or a change in medication can sometimes cause hair regrowth, but most people can say goodbye to stubble forever.

#2 Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are a gel-like product made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring carbohydrate found in our bodies that can hold up to 1000x their weight in water. As we age, we lose hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin. Loss of hyaluronic acid in aging skin is partially responsible for the formation of lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers can replace the skin’s hyaluronic acid and fill in and lift areas of the face that may be less full, without the cost, recovery, or downtime of plastic surgery.

Common areas to treat for lost volume are the cheeks, under eyes, nasolabial folds (lines between the corner of the nose and corner of the mouth), marionette lines (downward turn of the mouth/creases at the corner of the mouth), perioral lines (lip lines, lines around the mouth), and more. Dermal fillers can also be used to augment and enhance lips.

The cost for fillers is generally $500-$800 per syringe, and multiple syringes may be required depending on the level of volume loss that needs corrected. Results last 6-18 months on average.

#1 Botox

The number one aesthetic treatment for nearly a decade goes to Botox!! Botox is a safe, purified, FDA-approved protein that relaxes and softens the muscles responsible for causing frown lines (creases between the brows), around the eyes, and worry lines in the forehead. Years of muscle use in our faces-from smiling, squinting, stressing- create what begin as fine lines, and deepen over time. Botox can heal that dermal cracking or can be used preventatively to help deter their deepening.

Botox treatment takes just a few minutes and results last 3-4 months. Cost caries depending on how many areas you are treating and the level of movement your muscle has. On average a treatment starts at approximately $200 and can be upward of $800-$900. Most offices offer complimentary consultations, so discuss dosing with your provider for a cost estimate.

Deciding which treatments will help you reach your aesthetic goals can be overwhelming and is best left to the experts. The above list is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to aging gracefully and turning back the hands of time. Discuss with your provider which services will help you to look and feel your best and most confident.

Introduction to Emsculpt NEO

unnamed

EMSCULPT NEO reduces fat by 30% and increases muscle by 25% on average. You can sculpt your abdomen, buttocks, arms and legs. This innovative solution is the first of its kind to simultaneously treat both muscle and fat to dramatically change the tone and appearance of the treated area in as little as 4 weeks! EMSCULPT NEO delivers radio frequency to destroy fat and a HIFEM® procedure to stimulate muscle in the treatment area.

How it works:

Fat Breakdown: In less than 4 minutes the temperature of fat reaches levels that cause permanent damage, destroying the fat cells.

Supramaximal Contraction: During the warm up phase the muscle temperature raises by several degrees, similar to what a warm-up activity does before any workout. After the warm-up phase muscles in the treated area are contracted at intensities that are not achievable during routine exercise.

After Treatment: The fat cells are slowly removed from the body through the lymphatic system and the strained muscle fibers initiate a growth process. This results in fat elimination and muscle building.

Treatments are performed once a week for four weeks. Treatments take approximately 30 minutes. Muscle will continue to build for up to six months with the most noticeable difference visible at 90 days. Ideal candidates are under 30 BMI and have under 6″ of visceral fat.
